  • 1 box German chocolate cake mix
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/3 cup canola oil
  • 1 package (11 oz) caramel bits
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1/2 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 2 cups chopped pecans
  • 1 container chocolate fudge frosting

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F and grease a 9×13 baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the cake mix, milk, eggs, and canola oil with a hand mixer until smooth.
  3. Pour half of the batter into the prepared dish and bake for 15 minutes.
  4. Meanwhile, make the caramel filling by combining caramel bits, melted butter, and evaporated milk in a saucepan over medium heat; whisk until smooth.
  5. Pour the warm caramel over the baked cake layer.
  6. Sprinkle chocolate chips and chopped pecans on top of the caramel layer.
  7. Spoon remaining batter over the filling and spread gently with a knife.
  8. Bake for an additional 20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out mostly clean.
  9. Allow to cool completely before frosting with chocolate fudge frosting and adding more chocolate chips and pecans for decoration.
