  • 1 cup diced celery

  • 1.5 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1.5 cups green split peas
  • 8 cups reduced-sodium chicken broth
  • Ham bone or hocks

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large pot and sauté onions, carrots, and celery for about 5–8 minutes until softened. Stir in garlic and spices, cooking for another minute.
  2. Add rinsed split peas, ham bone, bay leaves, and chicken broth. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer uncovered for 60–90 minutes until peas are tender.
  3. Remove the ham bone, shred meat back into the soup, and blend part of it for creaminess if desired.
  4. Serve warm with crusty bread or fresh herbs.
